Want to study Computer Sciences or IT in Australia? You can expect a wide range of options because the field of Computer Sciences is an umbrella that covers plenty of specialisms. At one end of the spectrum you could study computer hardware, while at the other end you will have the chance to study more logical-mathematical dimensions of Computer Science. You could specialise in Digital Gaming or you could find a program with a much stronger Business direction. Studying Computer Sciences could be a vital step in your career if you want to work in Software Engineering, or it could just as easily bring you into contact with Cybernetics or Artificial Intelligence.

Of course, your starting point is a personal interest in computers and all things digital, but you still need to make sure the field is exactly right for you and allows you the space you need for development. For example, we mentioned Digital Gaming – in a Computer Sciences context you’ll be less likely to focus on the audio-visual appeal and playability that underlies some of the globally popular Gaming applications, and more likely to deal with building software solutions required for the Gaming industry. If you are more design oriented, you may need to choose a degree outside the field of Computer Sciences.

Traditionally, on a computing sciences or software engineering program, most students will learn about computer systems from both software and hardware points of view, plus networked systems and databases. Course fundamentals typically cover the machine architecture and general theory – you’ll also learn about algorithms, programming languages, and ways of using numerical methods. With this last point in mind, check the entry requirements for each course carefully early on – some programs need you to have a strong ability in Math.

How will you learn? What is common to pretty much every Computer Sciences course is an emphasis on working through problems in a systematic and logical way – crucial, for example, when your task is to write a program. Typically, your course units will take shape through a series of lectures and practical classes, and you will be given personal tutorial support. Practical work is usually at the forefront and in order to prepare graduates for the workplace, there is normally an emphasis on group tasks, working as a member of a team to solve a problem. Usually, all the work you produce will be assessed through a combination of continuous coursework and formal examinations.
