A leading Australian university has pointed out that for about 70% of clinical decisions, doctors rely on information from Medical Science in areas such as Laboratory Medicine.

Students of Laboratory Medicine focus on methods of testing in the lab to identify disease and develop treatments. They work with blood (haematology and transfusions), study cells (developing cytopathology knowledge), and also tissues (gaining experience in histopathology). Lab Medicine is also for those interested in the science of transplants.

You can consider Biomedical Science if you are interested in cancer research. Expect also to complete courses in immunology, cell and molecular biology and biochemistry, plus human physiology and anatomy.

Majors in Pharmacy will require the same sound knowledge of human biology we have seen above, joined by pharmacy-specific courses. Pharmacy students learn how drugs are administered. They study toxicology, and how we are affected by harmful chemicals – for this you’ll also have the support of Chemistry as it applies to meds. You will study how clinical trials work, learn skills in medical writing, and develop an awareness of how governments are involved in drug regulation. Courses give you an insight into the Pharmaceutical Industry – including how drugs are marketed and sold. And as part of your Pharmacy education, there is likely to be a strong emphasis on work placements – often with optional courses in Business available to students.
